Overview
Enteroviruses are single-stranded RNA viruses that include the Coxsackieviruses, echovirus, and rhinovirus that preferentially inhabit the intestinal tract. They are the most common cause of viral meningitis in adults and children and are associated with hand, foot, and mouth disease and polio. In particular, Coxsackie A viruses are associated with hand, foot, and mouth disease. Coxsackie B viruses are associated with pericarditis and myocarditis.
