Overview
Tricuspid stenosis (TS) describes the narrowing of the tricuspid valve leading to obstructed blood flow through the tricuspid valve, which separates the right atrium and right ventricle of the heart.
Tricuspid stenosis accounts for <1% of heart valve diseases.
Causes
- Rheumatic heart disease, it is usually associated with mitral stenosis
- Congenital
- Infective endocarditis vegetations
- Atrial myxomas
Presentation
A key finding of TS is a low-rumbling diastolic murmur which increases with respiration.
Investigations
Overview
- ECG:
- May show right atrial hypertrophy with peaked P-waves
- Chest x-ray:
- May show right atrial dilation
- Echocardiogram:
- Identifies TR
Management
Overview
Management involves treating heart failure and surgery may be considered in some patients.
Complications
- Right heart failure
- Arrhythmia
