Overview
Post-lumbar puncture headache (PLPH) is the most common complication of a lumbar puncture (LP) and occurs in around 4/10 patients. It is caused by reduced cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pressure.
Presentation
Features include:
- A headache that starts within 24-48 hours to a week after an LP
- A headache that can last from 2-8 days
- The headache is worse in the upright position
- The headache is relieved when lying down
Management
Overview
- Analgesia and rest
- Caffeine
- Epidural blood patch – a small amount of blood is injected in the epidural space where the lumbar puncture was and a blood clot patches the leak
