Overview
Hypospadias is a congenital disorder characterised where the urethral meatus does not open from its normal position and instead opens lower down on the ventral side of the penis. It is thought to have a genetic element to it, as its risk is increased in future male children.
Around 10% of patients with hypospadias have associated undescended testes.
Presentation
Hypospadias is usually identified on a newborn examination. Parents may notice an abnormal stream of urine.
Management
Overview
- Refer for surgery at around 12 months of age
- Circumcision should not be performed before surgery as the foreskin may be used in the surgery for hypospadias
Complications
- Difficulty passing urine
- Erectile dysfunction
- Cosmetic concerns
