Overview
Haemophilus influenzae is a Gram-negative coccus found in the mucous membranes and nasopharynx. It is the most common cause of infective exacerbations of COPD and bronchiectasis.
Haemophilus influenzae type B (Hib) is an encapsulated type that is associated with infection, particularly in children, including epiglottitis, meningitis, and septic arthritis. Following the introduction of the Hib vaccine, Hib infections have dropped.
