Overview
Certain drugs can lead to damage to the liver, gallbladder and biliary tree and can cause features similar to acute viral hepatitis.
Management involves stopping the offending drug.
Drugs that can cause hepatitis
- Paracetamol
- Statins
- Alcohol
- Amiodarone
- Methotrexate
- Isoniazid
- Nitrofurantoin
Drugs that can cause liver cirrhosis
- Alcohol
- Methotrexate
- Amiodarone
Drugs that can cause cholestasis with/without hepatitis
- Oral oestrogens (e.g. the combined oral contraceptive pill)
- Fibrates
- Anabolic steroids
- Tamoxifen
