Dengue fever is a viral haemorrhagic fever due to the dengue virus, which can be spread by Aedes mosquitos. Other examples of viral haemorrhagic fever include dengue fever and Ebola.

Features of dengue fever include:
- Fever, headache (retro-orbital), myalgia, and arthralgia
- Maculopapular rash
- Thrombocytopenia and haemorrhage – petechiae, purpura, ecchymoses
Severe dengue is a more virulent form which can cause:
- Disseminated intravascular coagulopathy
- Shock – known as dengue shock syndrome
