Acanthamoeba is a genus of free-living amoebae that are often found in soil and water. It is associated with infections of the eye (amoebickeratitis), respiratory tract, brain (e.g. encephalitis), and bones. Keratitis can happen in healthy people and is associated with contact lens use.
