Paediatric Umbilical Hernia
Overview
Umbilical hernias are relatively common in children. They present as a bulge at the site of the umbilicus and are often found during routine visits after a child is born.
Management
Most umbilical hernias resolve by 3 years of age and require no treatment.
Paediatric Inguinal Hernia
Overview
Inguinal hernias present as groin swellings and are more common in male children. They are generally superior and medial to the pubic tubercle.
Management
- If presenting within first few months of life: urgent repair (due to high risk of strangulation)
- If >1 year old the risk is lower and repair may be performed electively
